Fasciculation

Most frequently, no pathological findings are found, i.e. no physical disease. In this case, the symptoms are referred to as benign fasciculation syndrome. If true muscle spasms are also present, this is called fasciculation-crampus syndrome (crampus = spasm).

The symptomatology is considered "benign" because it is not a sign of impending neurological disease or muscle disease. However, it can be very disturbing and possibly anxiety-provoking. The above film is mainly about this symptom.

In addition - but much more rarely - sometimes serious diseases can also be the cause of the complaints: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, polio, muscle diseases or also as a consequence of nerve disease in the case of metabolic damage (e.g. diabetes). The diagnosis is usually made by a neurologist.

Medications, electrolyte disorders, coffee , alcohol and more can also be responsible for muscle twitching.

Of course, the therapy depends on the respective causes.

In benign fasciculation syndrome, risk factors should be minimized (coffee, alcohol), general relaxation is generally favorable, the supply of missing electrolytes is also worth a try.However, the study situation on magnesium is relatively poor.

The active substances from the cinchona bark (quinine and quinidine) are effective, but there are rare but serious side effects. Therefore, intake must be weighed. Finally, agents for epilepsy (e.g., carbamazepine) may be considered.

From our point of view, at least in part of the cases, respiration plays an essential role. Here also another, often very effective possibility opens up to improve the symptomatology without medication.
